A Pie with 8 Pieces

When working on life balance I often use the metaphor of a pie with 8 pieces. Thinking of this like the wheel of balance, each of the pieces represents an aspect of your life, family and friends, health, wealth, career, recreation, romance, environment, and spirituality.

Whether you are new to this concept or not, it is important to know which piece of the pie is a personal priority for you, and which piece of the pie currently needs your attention. If you aren't sure, ponder this first.

Once you have that clarity, ask yourself what is the next action I need to take regularly or immediately to make this one aspect of my life the best it could possibly be?

Make a commitment to that step, create accountability for yourself and just do it!

The Next Step

Making plans and organizing your life is great, and remember, when you have your whole day all planned out and then your computer goes down - breathe. Yes, first take a nice deep breath (in and out through your nose) and then start with the next thing in front of you.

Plans are the right brain's way of creating a feeling of security, being in the process is the left brains way of re-minding us to live in the mystery. The cool thing is that within the mystery is the security of knowing that even though I don't know what or how all IS well.

Tears

The Soul would have no rainbow if the eyes had no tears. - Native American Proverb

Travelling through Wyoming a little over a week ago I came across this proverb that just really spoke to me. Only a few days before I had been discussing with a class how important tears are to the human emotional guidance system and how difficult it is for some of us to cry.

I personally have been blessed with the ability to cleanse my heart with tears, but it wasn't always without shame. I am grateful today for the journey, the people, and the years that have supported me in letting go of the shame and embrace all of my emotions as a part of the process. I am grateful for the rainbow that stretches across my Soul as a result of these experiences.

May your Soul be adorned with the brightest and most brilliant of rainbows.

Good? Bad?

I was just re-visiting this story from one of my favorite books by Dan Millman, "The Way of the Peaceful," and I thought of what a great re-minder it is. I decided to share it with you. I hope you receive as much from this as I have through the years.

An old man and his son worked a small farm, with only one horse to pull the plow. One day, the horse ran away.
"How terrible," sympathized the neighbors. "What bad luck."
"Who knows whether it is bad luck or good luck," the farmer replied.
A week later, the horse returned from the mountains, leading five wild mares into the barn.
"What wonderful luck!" said the neighbors.
"Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?" answered the old man.
The next day, the son, trying to tame one of the horses, fell and broke his leg.
"How terrible. What bad luck!"
"Bad luck? Good luck?"
The army came to all the farms to take the young men for war, but the farmer's son was of no use to them, so he was spared.
"Good? Bad?"

Baby Steps

Just got back from a great trip to Lake Tahoe. While we were there we rode the gondola to the top of the mountain, and from there took a hike to the peak at Heavenly ski resort. It was awesome!

As we were starting the hike I was thinking of how out of shape I was and whether or not I would make it. We ran in to a wise woman who told us we could make it.

"Just take baby steps," she said.

"What if they (referring to the others we were hiking with) don't want to take baby steps," we asked.

In her wisdom she answered, "Just let them push ahead. It's not a race to the top. You will all make it."

So, I took her advice, and enjoyed a wonderful hike to the top, laughing with a friend, watching the others hike much faster, re-minding each other to take baby steps, sometimes walking a little faster and sometimes stopping to enjoy the view!

As I've returned home to my goals and millions of things I need to get done I am re-minding myself of the wise woman's words.....

BABY STEPS! Just let others do what they will. Keep taking baby steps. Enjoy the moment. I will get there in due time!

What We Resist - Persists!

In my last blog post I shared a recent insight I had that was very helpful to me. After posting it many people replied that it was helpful. Now I notice even though it helped me to get going, and I have been excited about the results I have had, I also haven't posted since then....hmm?

So, in my self commitment to share from my heart I am sharing AGAIN from another place in which I found myself STUCK. Again, this has helped me. I hope it helps you!

- Tanya

If what we resist persists, how do we stop resisting?

First just STOP - Now is How - Be in THIS moment - Breathe - Inventory my thoughts.

First thought - "I'm stuck."
Second thought - "I don't know what to do."
Third thought - "I am not good enough."
Next thought - "I'm not enough - period."

Bring these thoughts to the Truth. The Truth of my being.

The Truth - "I am enough."
The Truth - "I am more than enough."
The Truth - "I am connected to Divine Wisdom."
The Truth - "Divine Wisdom is the core of my being..."

Possible New Thought - I know what to do (no I don't) Okay, would I be willing to try on that it is possible some part of me knows what to do?

Yes.

Thought - Some part of me (maybe a teensy, little part of me) knows what to do.

Really?

Is it possible that Divine Wisdom is the Truth of who I am?

Yes!

Ok, start from that place!

Overcoming Limitations

I’m sitting at a beautiful resort collecting my thoughts for a writing workshop I am attending. I notice fear, anxiety, awe and excitement whirling inside of me. I am thinking I don’t know where to start writing.

The avoidance part of me is looking for other fun things to do INSTEAD of writing. The shaming part of me is telling me all sorts of stories about how I will never finish this project so why start.

I re-mind myself to breathe. I am breathing. Breathing is good. What I would like to be doing is writing. (“That is typically what one does at a writing workshop,” the shaming me adds!)

A friend at the workshop quietly hands me a piece of paper with a writing by Abraham Hicks on it, “all limitations are self-imposed.” Oh yah. I needed that re-minder I think. All those voices are me. I can love them all for the gifts they bring, and remember they are just trying to help.

“I don’t need your help,” I tell shame and avoidance. Thanks for loving me so much you would do anything possible to keep me from pain. I am willing to face the fear, the anxiety and even the pain today. “Are you sure?” They ask. Yes, “I AM.”

…..and I begin writing!

In a hurry?

In a hurry? Don't. Don't hurry, don't rush. Slow down. Breathe.

I'm pretty sure I am writing this re-minder mostly for myself. I know I needed it......(smile)

Transitions

In Kundalini yoga there is a pause or transition between each exercise or pose. As one pose ends this brief transition time is practiced by consious breathing, and being aware of the way the energy is now moving through your body. This time serves as closure for the proceeding pose, a re-minder to be present and a smooth transition into the beginning of the next pose.

I've observed that when I am teaching a class or taking a class I practice these transitions very well. They serve me, and I reap the benefit. However, when I am practicing yoga by myself I notice I tend to race through the transition or skip it altogether. Hmm?

Once again, Kundalini yoga has served as a wonderful re-minder for life. I've noticed that I tend to race through or skip transitions in my everyday life. In fact, I've noticed that almost everyone I know including clients, friends and even perfect strangers are doing the same thing. Rushing through everyday, life just becomes a blur.

Today, take a moment at those transitions in your life to take a conscious breath and become aware of the moment. These transitions may be times like when you have finished preparing a meal, finished eating the meal, finished a conversation, gotten ready to head out the door, or finished reading this blog!

See what you notice as you honor transitions in your life. Happy transitioning!

Let Go - Get What You Want

"I no longer presume to know how life should come or go: letting go in this way brings a sense of freedom." -Dan Millman, Wisdom of the Peaceful Warrior

If you've ever made plans for your life and had Life turn on a dime in the opposite direction of your plans, you can relate to this quote. When I read it I thought, how true.

As a coach I hear everyday how much we as people value freedom. This quote re-veals the secret to that freedom. Every day as I go about making my plans and letting go of the outcome, and watching as things unfold - sometimes as I planned and sometimes not at all as I planned (and sometimes it seems like it is never as I planned) - I notice that letting go of outcomes not only gives me freedom, but peace.

Those two go hand in hand for me. Think about it. Peace with out freedom? Freedom without peace? For me I want both. Whether things go as I planned or not I have re-alize that what I truly want is freedom and peace. What do you know? When I let go and go with the flow I get what I wanted no matter what I "get!"

E x p a n d by Enjoying

"Your capacity e x p a n d s in small increments each time you consiously let yourself enjoy the money you have, the love you feel, and the creativity you are expressing in the world. As that capacity for enjoyment e x p a n d s, so does your finacial abundance, the love you feel, and the creativity you express." - Gay Hendricks, The Big Leap

This works! I have been practicing enjoying all the wonderful things in my life no matter how small......a moment when my children are enjoying a great conversation with each other, a moment when I notice the hollyhocks in my front yard, all the way to a great tax return. I have been practicing focussing my attention on anything that is good in my life.....and.....

.....even when I feel totally stressed out I have been re-minding myself to look for something....ANYTHING....positive to focus on and practice - e x p a n d i n g that feeling. It works. And, my favorite part is it works instantly.

Feather or Hammer

"The universe will teach us our lessons with the tickle of a feather or the whomp of a sledgehammer, depending on how open we are to learning the particular lesson. Getting stubborn and defensive invites the sledgehammer; getting open and curious invites the feather. It took me a long time to figure out who was in charge of the painfulness of my lessons." -Gay Hendricks, The Big Leap

When I read this passage I had to laugh out loud. Not only can I relate, but even after knowing who is in charge of the painfulness of my lessons I still find myself in the path of that hammer.

This is when I need to re-mind myself - progress not perfection. And, focus on the fact that I am choosing the feather more and more often. WHEW!

The Gift Beyond Perfectionism

Here is a snippet from one of my favorite inspiring daily email messages Daily Groove about parenting, by Scotte Noelle. www.enjoyparenting.com/dailygroove

"Perfectionistic parenting is rooted in the false idea
that it's bad to make a mistake or fall short of one's
expectations."

I totally agree, and would add that perfectionism in any area of your life robs you of the opportunity to receive the gift of your mistakes, frustrations and challenges.

Today's re-minder - next time you notice you've made a mistake or fallen short of your expectations in any area of your life - stop - look and listen. This is opportunity knocking at your door. There is a gift hidden in this experience.

Ask yourself, "What if I allowed myself to be perfectly imperfect? What would happen if I let go of perfectionism? Keep consciously searching until you have received the gift of your awareness.

Tigers and Bears

If I got scared when I was little, my mom would tell me to think of tigers instead of bears. She said that your brain can not think of two things at the same time so if you are afraid of bears think of tigers, and your brain can't think of the bears. As a result, you won't feel afraid.

I remember spending a lot of time thinking that both tigers and bears are scary. Why didn't she say if you are afraid of bears think of kitty cats? Guess what....it worked. In thinking of why she said what she said, my brain couldn't think about whatever I was afraid of, and I no longer felt afraid.

I use this same concept as an adult. When I am feeling stress or fear about something, I focus on something positive. It works. As soon as I feel less stress or fear I am in a better place to make a positive choice about anything on my mind.

P.S. Reminder: Call your mother.....:)

Stronger Voice

Recently I had a very difficult decision to make. After giving it careful consideration I realized that ultimately I knew what I wanted, but I was allowing my fear to keep me from following my heart.

I decided to gently re-mind myself that there was really nothing to fear in this situation, but everytime I used my peaceful, gentle voice to re-mind myself I felt like a yoyo being pulled back and forth between my gentle re-minder and my fear. Inside my head it sounded something like....

Gentle Re-minder: "There is nothing to fear. Everything is in order."

Fear: "You're crazy. You're making a big mistake."

Finally I realized that the gentle re-minder wasn't doing the trick. What I needed was a strong boundary with my fear. I changed my approach by raising my tone of voice. Everytime I felt the fear, stress or shame I started to say as if speaking directly to it, "STOP! I don't need your opinion. Leave me alone!"

It worked! Almost immediately I felt the stress fall away. I felt peace. I felt centered in my clarity to follow my heart.

Best Medicine

I saw a very funny movie last night, and it was such a great re-minder....
truly, laughter IS the best medicine. Those endorphins are Life's sweet gift!

It re-mindz me of what it says on "The Secret" about how important it is to re-member to consciously choose to do things that include laughter and joyful feelings. Comedy is such an easy, wonderful way to do that. Cuts right through stress! What is your favorite comedy?

The Hurry Habit

Slow down to go fast....

Hurry easily becomes a habit in our fast and furious society. Slowing down can be a challenge partly because in slowing down we must exercise our "no muscle." We must learn to say no to the things that get us going so quickly that we lose our peace and serenity.

It is fear that propels us to hurry. Fear that we won't get it finished, that we won't get enough or be enough. Fear of.....

Let go of your fear and become poised in knowing your greatness.

"Remember that poise and power are inseperably associated." - Wallace D. Wattles

Double Duty Gratitude (fear - part 3)

Gratitude is to fear as aloe and sun screen are to the sun burn. It's a good idea to apply plenty of gratitude to your life before you are exposed to too much "heat." But if you find your self with a "fear burn" gratitude acts as the aloe solution, too! Apply gratitude liberally to the burn and feel the cooling sensation soothe your soul.

Fear? Breathe! (part 2)

"Fear is only excitement without the breath."
- Robert Heller

Our breath is connected to the way our brain releases certain chemicals in our brains. Breathing in and out through our mouth releases adrenaline that signals our body to react to situations such as danger or the need for quick action.

When we can identify that we are having fear and we wish to let it go, adrenaline is not what we want. Instead, breathing in and out slowly and deeply through our nose signals the brain to relax.

Have fear? Breathe!

Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself

FDR's statement, "There is nothing to fear but fear itself," is true in every aspect of our lives. If in fact all we have to fear is the fear itself and not how to pay the bills, get the job, deal with the health issue or __(fill in the blank)__then what do we do about fear?

You are probably aware of and possibly using some strategies to deal with fear already. Some of these strategies may be constructive - some not so constructive.

Among the not so constructive stratagies we find things like over eating, over spending, over drinking and even over exercising just to name a few. Noticing these behaviors signals a need for constructive strategies.

Many of the constructive strategies start with daily disciplines in each of three catagories, body, mind and spirit - balanced exercise, reading positive material, or meditation.

What are some of the strategies you use? What are some that work for you? What are some that don't work for you? What are new strategies you might consider incorporating?

Don't Forget To Take a Time Out

This is a great way to re-align your mind. When things get a little chaotic - take a break! Better yet, make it a habit to take a time out every day. Sometimes just a little down time can give us a better perspective on things. Even stopping and slowly counting to ten can re-set our mind to align better with our goals for the day.

A regular meditation discipline is a great way to take a regular time out. This gives our mind a chance to re-align on a daily basis and has so many other physical, mental and spiritual benefits!

When Be - Do - Have "Doesn't Work"

(Be Do Have part 3)

You might say, “Wait a minute!
You said the BE part is a given, and I am doing the DO part, so why am I not having the HAVE part?”

This is a common quandary. What happens is belief often gets in the way. Belief is the part of you that forgets or denies your BEINGNESS. So you can take action until you are blue in the face, and if your beliefs do not align with the basic beingness behind your goal you will find you are not getting the results you want.

So what to do? Identify and let go of the belief that does not serve you. Re-member the truth of your beingness and re-mind or affirm it for yourself.

Be - Do - Have

Be - Do - Have (part 1)

So often we get caught in the routine of doing
whatever we're doing without really stopping to
think about if what we are doing is creating
what we desire....you've heard it before....
be - do – have.

You can plug into this equation anywhere and
create the results you desire. For instance, if
what you desire is financial prosperity
(that's the “have” part), all you need to do is use the
equation.

Be (prosperity) + Do (prosperous action) = Have (financial prosperity)

Be=be prosperity – this part is for the most part
a given because you ARE prosperity.

Do=do prosperity – think prosperous thoughts –
take prosperous actions

Have=experience financial prosperity

It's that simple!

Be + Do = Have

Which part of the equation are you missing?

Why the hypen in re-minderz

The question has been posed as to why I use a hypen in re-minderz?

If you spend anytime looking into the origin of words you will find many clues to meaning and as a result....the basis of how we use these words to create our lives. Have you ever really looked at the word reminder?

Re comes from the latin root ri meaning again.....and then there is mind and then -er which I loosely translate to mean one who does. Having looked at it in that way re-minder as I am using it is one who assists others in bringing their mind into alignment again.

I particularly love the again part because it holds the key to what I teach.....which is....I am simply reminding you of the truth that already and always has existed at your core. When you connect with and live from that truth you are very powerfully creative - successful - abundant.

Let It Be

Early this morning I received a re-minder from the lyrics of a song..."Let it be. There will be an answer. Let it be," by The Beatles.

So often when I experience stress in my life I forget this Wisdom. There will be an answer. "Stress is a fear reaction to life." Louise Hay re-minds me. When I am feeling fear it is because I am not practicing faith. Somewhere I have unconsiously chosen fear over faith. And then I am re-minded (by a song, friend, affirmation, reading) and I can consiously choose faith.

This morning when I heard the lines to that song I felt a wave of immediate re-lief....quickly followed by another wave of fear. So, I gently re-mind myself with the words of the song as a mantra/affirmation. "There will be an anwer." There IS an answer. I may not be consiously aware of it, but I KNOW there IS an answer.

At the center of my being, in the Truth of my being lies Divine Wisdom. In that place the answer exists, and in Divine Timing it will be re-vealed in my life. I know from past experience that although I think I want to know now, when the knowing comes it will be perfect (Divine) timing. I will understand. So for now. I rest in the faith that all is perfect in my world.

Namaste

Be-Do-Have...You ARE prosperous

(Be - Do - Have part 2)

You've read "Be-Do-Have" and you have a question about the line that says "you ARE prosperous."

Yes, You ARE prosperous. This is the essence of your BEING. You are created as a whole being. As a whole being you ARE prosperous. You ARE enough. You ARE joy. You ARE love. You ARE creative. You ARE beauty. And MORE!

This is the idea upon which affirmations work. I am.... This is the Truth of who you are. It is unchanging. It is at the center of your being. Some of us are more aware of this Truth than others. If you are new to this idea and you are having difficulty believing this I encourage you to consider it as true just for a short while. Maybe a day, maybe two. What if this were true? Is it possible?

BUT you say. If I am prosperous why do I experience lack, poverty, difficult financial situations?

I invite you to re-read "Be-Do-Have." The piece that you are missing is not the beingness. Your beiness is shining through some "faulty" filters. Some belief that is not in alignment with beingness. The belief may be I am not prosperous, or I don't deserve prosperity. This is the part where you change your thinking!
